An interesting thing about the glaciers in our area is that while some of them are still expanding, there are several like the Mendenhall Glacier just up the road from our house that have been retreating for several years.  Here you can see the rivers that form from the run-off during the summer months, but come winter time, the massive amounts of snow this area will get will help to continue building the glacier.
