One of the highlights of living in Juneau... is getting to leave! Juneau is a wonderful, beautiful place...but it is SO nice when you get to board the plane that will take you to a place with roads that actually go somewhere.
In the upper left corner of this picture you see a “small lake” which is actually the lake that forms right in front of the Mendenhall Glacier, which is just up the road from where we live. Almost directly below that, you can see where the water is a different color. That is where the fresh water from the Mendenhall River (formed by the run-off from the glacier) meets up with the salt water of the ocean as it dumps into Fritz Cove.
In the second picture, you see Auke Bay, Coghlin Island (in the middle of the picture) and Shelter Island in the bottom left corner. This whole area is a great place for fishing and whale watching.
